Anti Theft Vehicle Tracking Is Compulsory In Brazil

It is compulsory in Brazil to fit anti theft vehicle tracking to all new vehicles and has been since August of this year.

This was originally a six month trial, but due to legal problems to bringing in the law as permanent legislation. The Brazilian government wanted to make it a permanent requirement from February 2010, but due to legal chalenges the legislation may have to be modified and this could push back this deadline.

The reason the Brazilian government wanted make anti theft vehicle tracking systems compulsory for all new vehicles is that there is a high level of car theft in Brazil. About 350,000 vehicles were stolen in Brazil every year. This is a staggeringly high figure and therefore it is essential that the authorities get a hold on this problem before it gets any worse, as many car thefts car jackings. The rate of such violent crimes needs to be lowered.

The legal problems that surround the new legislation are many and cover such areas as technical specifications for the equipment, the impact it will have on the vehicle tracking systems industry and various other petty problems that are really just bureaucracy.
