Are Roads In The UK To Face Pay As You Go Pricing

The RAC think that many roads in Britain will cost drivers each time they drive on them. This will mean that drivers will have to think more carefully before they decide to driver anywhere and this could cut the number of journeys made considerably.

It is thought that the amount of traffic on the road could increase by up to 25% and this could cause major problems on the UK’s roads. Therefore it is imperative that we come up with a solution. If there is too much traffic on the roads the increase in traffic jams could be crippling to private transport. By encouraging people not to drive unless they really need to, it could be the solution we need.

Many countries abroad such as France have tolls on their motorways. This helps to cut down the traffic on the roads. Another way of introducing pay as you go driving is to fit all vehicles with a vehicle tracking system and send a bill to each driver at the end of each month. This has its own problems as it introduces privacy issues.

Another solution is to put up registration plate recognition cameras to record which cars are driving on which roads and at what times. This is used in London to enforce the congestion zone and is quite an effective method of charging people to drive on the roads.
