With great interest I read your article. Do have any figures to back up the number of installed vehicle tracking systems in Brazil? Do you know whether a mandate exists for mandatory introduction of SVT in Brazil?

Many hire companies already use trackers in their high end vehicles but don't see trackers as cost effective for lower end vehicles. Because most hire companies only keep vehicles for a short period of time the costs and logistics associated with de and re installing them are too high.

Do all tracking units have to be Thatcham approved, if hire companies are looking to keep costs down, then other systems are around. Most cars that are stolen hit the shipping ports for export in 24 hours. Would not a system that alarms at these locations save money ?, a simple tag unit fitted in a car with a battery life of 5 years ,and cost of about £90 could report direct to a web site . The tag would then report as stolen, and could alarm and send out e-mail or texts.
Are these systems around, yes?

The GPS market in India has been growing, indeed, but IMO does not live up to the hype and reports. It is a commodity market with over 60 (!) vendors of various types (and of course capabilities and caliber). Basically many fleet owners install GPS but are disillusioned with either the quality of the service they receive (because tracking operators cannot sustain their operations) or they find out it is not giving them the benefits they want/need. Another issue is that the environment, both actual and human, is extremely difficult. Drivers sabotage the units, take the SIM cards out to try and make calls, and do all sort of things. The conditions in the vehicles is also very difficult and the quality of installation matters a lot. Anyway, yes, a growing market, but a VERY difficult one to be in.

One other option is to combine tracking solutions with good risk awareness.

www.haulnet.eu is the only free to use website supported by ACPO, Truckpol, the RHA and insurance companies and provides realtime information on safe (and unsafe!) places for lorries to park. HaulNET was launched on 4th August 2009, and in the first month received over 32,000 hits.

HaulNET is not the answer, but it is part of the solution.
