Explaining GPS Tracking Technology

The number one tool used by fleet managers today to help them keep up to date as to where their vehicles are at any given time is GPS vehicle tracking technology. There are basically two types of GPS tracking technology that are available to fleet managers, the first type which has been around the longest is GPS logging, the second type is called real time GPS tracking and is a more recent type of GPS technology.

Logging GPS technology is where tracking devices are placed in a vehicle for a determined length of time and then are retrieved. The devices are then attached to a computer and the information is downloaded into a database. The information is then placed on to a map which shows where a vehicle has been since the GPS device was attached. These devices are very reliable and are relatively lost cost, the disadvantage is the information they give is usually a few months old.

Real time GPS tracking technology is the most recent and better way to manage a fleet, the advantage of using this type is that gives a fleet manager tracking information as it happens. This allows a manager to make on the spot decisions as things happen. The disadvantage is that they are expensive to purchase.
