Going Out Of Our Way To Avoid Motorways
The AA have reported that we travel around 600 million miles every year just to avoid going on motorways. The AA came to this figure from the people who use the AA route planner. Many drivers increased their journey distances by an average of 125 miles.
Many drivers especially young drivers and women drivers reported that they were not confident in driving on motorways. The AA said despite the fact that many people are not confident in driving on motorways the fact is that motorways have been proven by statistics to be safer than other roads.
You might be amazed to hear that 20% of men and 40% of women do not go on a motorway at all in their first year of driving.
This is a real shame as A roads tend to experience more accidents than motorways. To add to this motorways tend to present a faster route with shorter journey times than A roads.
For drivers that do have a fear of going on motorways a few lessons on a motorway once you have passed your test would probably help to overcome any fears you had and also equip you with the extra skills you need to drive safely on the motorway.
