GPS tracking systems used in the Wilderness
Ever thought about trekking in the woods or hiking up mountains? We often hear in the new about hikers just disappearing, what would have happened if they had a GPS unit with them? Could these disappearances have been avoided?
You can now use a travel GPS system which is good to have if you love to hike, especially if hiking in the mountains or in a dense wood. There are now many GPS tracking tools around with different benefits and prices and people must make sure they have the right GPS device to suit their needs in the outback.
The first and main thing you will need to make sure of is whether or not the GPS units amp covers the area that you have chosen to hiking in, if it doesn’t map out this area then it is practically useless, however some of the devices enable you to use a download feature which you may be able to download the area from. Some of the more basic GPS units will give you longitude and latitude so this does mean that you are still required to carry a printed map with you to determine your exact location.
It is important that the GPS devices that you choose to take with you is light in weight and small enough to carry with you wherever you may go. There would be no point taking a heavy device to use up all of your energy in carrying it. Obviously another important feature the GPS tracking device that you take with you is the battery life. This is not too important if you are camping and have a generator on site for you to recharge the device, however, if you are doing a long hike over several days the battery life is an essential need, many people try to purchase a device that is twice as much battery life than they really require.
Other non essential features that may be important to the hiker include colour screen, although much easier to read than black and white, this could bump up the price. Many hiking GPS tracking systems are now designed to track the path that you have taken therefore is able to direct you back to your starting point and informing you of the distance left for you to go. Some travel devices can even provide you with back to basics survival information, including hunting or fishing cycles and the sun and moon cycle. More features are added when newer models are produced. The prices of these devices will therefore increase as the newer models are launched.
