GPS Tracking Unit

At the heart of GPS tracking is a GPS tracking unit. This unit is attached to whatever you want to track. This maybe a car, van, lorry, wild animal, pet, mobile phone, child, valuable item or a myriad of other items that you may want to track for one reason or another.

The GPS tracking unit then frequently communicates with satellites that float above the earth’s atmosphere. This is done via the GPS receiver built into the unit.

These satellites give the time along with their location within each signal. The GPS tracking unit can then calculate their distance from each of the satellites and from this the unit can work out its location. They usually communicate with 4 satellites.

This information is then sent via the mobile phone network to a server. This server then serves the information up to remote computers via the internet. The end user can then view the location via the website. To view the location of your tracking units you will need to login to the website as this information is confidential.

The tracking unit on a vehicle tracking system often collects additional information such as fuel consumption, speed the vehicle is travelling at, whether the engine is on or not and many other things.
