Privacy Issues With Vehicle Tracking Systems

Like anything in this world everything has its good points and it’s bad points. As we have discussed in this blog on many occasions vehicle tracking brings many great benefits to businesses around the world, but there are some bad points to telematics as well.

The main disadvantage to GPS vehicle tracking systems or indeed any type of tracking is that it can infringe on people’s privacy. The UK government has suggested in the past that all vehicles should be fitted with GPS tracking to help instrument a more thorough road taxation system. This would involve taxing vehicles for going on certain roads at certain times.

It could also help to crack down on vehicles that should not be on the road or speeding offences. When I say vehicles that should not be on the road, I mean cars without MOTs or insurance.

This was only a suggestion and has not even been trialled yet. The suggestion did not go down well with the general public.

Some of the objections were as follows. It would be an infringement of privacy, the government would use it to track vehicles for other things in addition to the ones stated above. Also people did not like the idea of being taxed even more for using the roads.

It will be interesting to see if telematics is installed by the government in the future.
