Theft From Trucks
Theft from trucks is on the rise. Vehicle tracking and indeed trailer tracking is does help to combat theft from Lorries, but it is not the answer all types of truck theft.
There has been a recent stint of theft from Lorries that are parked up. When lorry drivers stop for the night to take a well earned break they are a prime target for thieves. Thieves will visit lorry parks and target trucks with curtain sides.
They simply cut the side open and climb in. If the lorry contains something that the criminals feel they can sell easily for reasonable profits they then continue to off load the contents of the trailer. Once they are on the trailer they can often open the trailer doors from the inside so as to make it easier to unload the contents.
This type of crime is on the increase and vehicle tracking is not a solution to it. Or at least it isn’t at the moment. It’s an ideal way of criminals getting around the security of vehicle tracking.
Whatever the case there needs to be a solution to this problem. One solution maybe to cease using trailers with curtain sides.
One other option is to combine tracking solutions with good risk awareness.
http://www.haulnet.eu is the only free to use website supported by ACPO, Truckpol, the RHA and insurance companies and provides realtime information on safe (and unsafe!) places for lorries to park. HaulNET was launched on 4th August 2009, and in the first month received over 32,000 hits.
HaulNET is not the answer, but it is part of the solution.
