A lot of managers of companies ask the same vital question when considering purchasing vehicle tracking systems, “Why can’t I just use mobiles to track the company’s vehicles?” Obviously this is one way of tracking vehicles as most companies and employees carry mobile phones with them, this is going to be a natural attraction.

There are many different problems however, with tracking company vehicles in this way as you can see below:

Firstly, for most companies it is their assets that are in the vehicle that they wish to track. With using a mobile phone the phone has to have been left in the vehicle for this to be tracked. So, if the phone is not left in the vehicle and the vehicle is stolen, then there will be nothing to track.

Mobile phone batteries need to be charged and turned on for the mobile phone to be tracked. This means that it is the employee’s responsibility to charge the phones. Everybody forgets at times that their phones need to be charged. This could cause problems if the vehicle is stolen when the mobile has no battery life.

The signal on a mobile phone can be lost. It is easy to place a mobile phone in a toolbox or lunch bag and disable the signal. With no signal the tracking will not pick up, therefore the vehicle again could be lost.

Mobiles can not track the speed in which the vehicles are traveling or how safely the employees are driving. They are also unable to monitor how long the employees are dawdling, using up company’s time.

So, the benefits of purchasing vehicle tracking systems are simple, with a wired device you are always aware that the devices are working. You also get the benefits that you can access vehicle information as and when you want/need.
